Concrete Basement Transformed Into Chic Guest Bedroom

Concrete Basement Transformed Into Chic Guest Bedroom

A concrete basement within a terraced house in North London, previously used as a storeroom, gym and gaming space, wasn’t living up to its full potential for the owners of the property. So they embarked on a renovation project to rework the layout and squeeze in an extra guest bedroom with brilliant results.

The owners enlisted the help of award-winning design consultancy, Run For The Hills, to oversee the renovation, who in turn created a new cosy TV gaming zone and a luxurious guest boudoir with a boutique hotel feel.

At the top of the stairs that lead down to the basement, a custom ‘mind your head’ neon sign, designed by the Run For The Hills graphics team and built by Kemp London, sits on an Anna Hayman hand-printed wallpaper, giving an indication of the distinctive space that is to follow.

Light, bright and airy, guests can close the industrial steel and reeded glass Crittall pocket doors in the boudoir, and pull across the thick curtains to totally enclose themselves, making it feel like a completely separate space. While custom timber wardrobes and fitted joinery, with rattan inner panels and brass ironmongery, add a touch of mid-century modern glamour.

Other highlights include the custom-built bedside tables in a chunky aged brass metal finish, limewash wall paint which offers a fresh yet textured backdrop, and we particularly love the unexpected use of wallpaper, including inside the wardrobe and shelving, adding intrigue. Style and functionality go hand in hand too: a larger, l-shaped vanity doubles as a dressing table and laptop space.

A pop of colour has been added to the bedroom in the form of the luxurious scalloped and fluted custom headboard, made from gold ochre Rose Uniake corduroy, while layers of quilted bedlinen and double stacked Soho Home and Romo decorative cushions, give a nod towards boutique hotel style.

From the Zara Home boucle armchair, to the Anna Hayman bespoke pouffe, and the luscious plants on the shelf, there’s a lovely botanical zen to the space, offering a sanctuary and comfortable place to sit and relax.

In the TV gaming zone, full-height cabinets in a rich dark blue conceal the family’s toys, games and memorabilia. The entire space is styled with an eclectic mix of vintage finds and accessories that the Run For The Hills team curated, as well as some of the owner’s favourite records and decor pieces. By using bold and moody colours, patterned wallpapers and interesting textures, layers and depth has been added to the new space, creating character with a sophisticated flair.

Anna Burles, co-founder of Run For The Hills, comments: ‘We’ve created a really beautiful and serene new space for them, enhanced with pops of colour, luxurious textures and unexpected clashing wallpapers. The new guest bedroom is a little haven where family and friends can relax in style when they come to stay.’
